Profile in Commerce - Stag Homes

Meet our Profile in Commerce - Stag Homes. Having recently relocated to the historic 5707 Nieman Rd building, Stag Homes is a design and remodeling firm created for Kansas City homeowners who expect more than surface-level results. Skylor Alexander, Owner of Stag Homes: I attended Johnson County Community College for business and have spent my career building and operating companies centered around construction and the built environment. Before focusing fully on Stag Homes, I spent about a decade building, operating, and scaling craft breweries, which gave me a strong foundation in systems, leadership, quality control, and growth. I’m also a Class A Licensed Contractor, the highest level of contractor licensing you can hold, which reflects the level of responsibility and experience required to manage complex residential projects safely and correctly. A couple of additional fun facts: I’m a certified welder, and I have a background in microbiology, both of which shaped my appreciation for precision, structure, and process. I started Stag Homes because I was frustrated with the way homeowners were being treated in this industry. I watched too many contractors disappear for weeks at a time, communicate poorly, leave projects disorganized, and create stressful, negative experiences for the people who were trusting them with their homes. I knew it didn’t have to be that way. From the beginning, I set out to build a company that operates with clear communication, accountability, and respect for the homeowner. My role today is to lead that vision, stay closely connected to our projects and clients, and make sure every project reflects a higher standard for how construction companies should operate. |

Tell us about your business. We’re a residential design and remodeling firm serving the greater Kansas City area. We are in our 7th year of business. While our new headquarters is located in Shawnee, our work and client base span across the region. Our focus isn’t on one specific city, it’s on delivering a high-quality experience for every homeowner we work with. We are also working on launching another division in Bentonville, AR, as well. We specialize in residential remodeling and design-build projects and exteriors, handling planning, design, and construction as one coordinated team. We have award winning designers and do all of our architectural drawings in-house and 3D Renderings with every project. That structure allows us to stay accountable from the first conversation through completion and helps eliminate many of the common frustrations homeowners run into when projects are fragmented across multiple contractors. The best part is that the client has their own portal to see daily work completed At our core, we’re in the business of caring for people so they actually enjoy the process. We just happen to love doing the building piece. Construction doesn’t have to be chaotic or stressful when it’s managed well. We’ve built our company around caring for people, and we do that with clear communication, organization, and respect for the homeowner, because the experience matters just as much as the finished result. |

What has been the most rewarding aspect of running your business in Shawnee? Are there any highlights or milestones that stand out? One of the most rewarding aspects of being located in Shawnee has been the sense of community and the willingness of the city to support businesses that are investing for the long term. We chose this location very intentionally. We didn’t just need office space, we wanted a place we could grow into, contribute to, and build something meaningful around. A major milestone for us is the redevelopment of our new building at 5707 Nieman Rd downtown, which includes the oldest home in Shawnee. Being able to restore a structure with that kind of history while building out a modern design and remodeling headquarters is something we’re really proud of. It’s not just about creating a workspace for our team, it’s about creating a place where homeowners, designers, and contractors can walk in, collaborate, and plan projects in a more thoughtful and organized way. First and foremost, this will be a design showroom we will share with the community. Another highlight has been the relationships we’ve built locally with other business owners, trades, and city staff and lots of clients in the Shawnee area. We have always been welcome here, and that’s made it easy to commit to Shawnee as a long-term home base. We’re still in the process of finishing the building, but even now it represents a big step forward for our company and a signal that we’re here to invest in this community for the long haul. |

| How do you see the future of your business within Shawnee, and are there any local trends or changes that excite you? The future of our business is centered heavily around our new design showroom and the continued expansion of our exteriors siding division. The building at 5707 Nieman will serve as more than just our headquarters. It is being built as a true design showroom where homeowners can walk in, see materials, explore options, and plan projects in a much more organized and transparent way. We want it to be a shared space for the community, other designers, and even contractors to use as a resource when planning projects. We love collaboration and do not look at other contractors as competition. We are all here to help homeowners. There is a real need for places where people can make informed decisions before construction begins, and that’s exactly what this showroom is being designed to support. At the same time, our exteriors division has been growing rapidly. We’ve built the systems and teams needed to handle a high volume of exterior projects like whole home siding projects, while maintaining quality and organization, and that side of the business is continuing to expand both locally and into other markets. Shawnee will remain the home base for that growth. The combination of a collaborative showroom positions us to keep investing in the city while serving clients throughout the region. What excites me most is being able to create something here that’s both a working headquarters and a resource for the public, a place that reflects the level of planning, professionalism, and experience we believe homeowners should have when improving their homes. |

| How has being part of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce influenced or supported your business? Could you share any specific examples? Being part of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce has been valuable in helping us build genuine relationships with other local business owners and stay connected to what’s happening in the community. For us, it’s less about transactional networking and more about being involved with people who are also invested in Shawnee’s growth and long-term success. Through the Chamber, we’ve had the opportunity to meet other business owners, trades, and community leaders who we now collaborate with regularly. Those relationships have led to referrals, partnerships, and a stronger understanding of how we can contribute to the local business environment. It’s also helped us stay informed on local development, events, and initiatives that affect both our business and our clients homes. As we build out our new showroom and headquarters, being connected to the Chamber gives us a platform to share what we’re creating and to make the space available as a resource for the community. The Chamber has been supportive of businesses that are investing in Shawnee for the long term, and we’re proud to be part of a network that’s focused on strengthening the local business community as a whole. If you could share one piece of advice with a new Chamber member or a new business in Shawnee, what would it be? Get involved early and build real relationships. Shawnee has a strong business community, but like any community, you get out of it what you put into it. Show up to events, introduce yourself, and take the time to learn what other businesses do and how you can support each other. The connections you make through the Chamber can lead to partnerships, referrals, and opportunities that don’t happen if you stay behind your desk. I’d also encourage new businesses to think long-term. Invest in the city, take pride in your space, and operate in a way that reflects well on the community. When you focus on doing quality work, communicating well, and treating people right, word travels quickly in a city like Shawnee. The Chamber is a great place to start building that reputation and becoming part of the larger business network here. Do you have a favorite story about the Chamber? A moment that stands out to me was early on at one of the local events when I realized just how collaborative Shawnee’s business community is. Instead of everyone guarding their space, people were openly sharing advice, contacts, and ways to help each other grow. That stuck with me. In an industry like construction, where competition can sometimes overshadow collaboration, it was refreshing to see business owners focused on strengthening the community as a whole.
