Central celebrates groundbreaking for Baugh-Marshall Chapel

More than 300 people attended the groundbreaking celebration in Shawnee, Kan., on September 11, 2009, for the new Baugh-Marshall Chapel on the campus of Central Baptist Theological Seminary. It was a signal day in the life of Central, as the seminary marked the first time in more than 50 years that it has celebrated a groundbreaking for a new building.  The Seminary’s Cultivating Excellence Capital Campaign has received almost $6.5 million in gifts and pledges, including a single gift of $2 million from the Baugh Family Foundation for the Chapel, which was the catalyst for this day’s celebration. New construction is just one of the many ways Central is moving toward a hopeful future.

The day began with the Fall Convocation service, the official start to the fall semester. The service included greetings from Central’s denominational partners, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and American Baptist Churches of the Central Region, as well as a powerful message by the Rev. Dr. Mary Armacost Hulst, President of the American Baptist Churches, USA.  Music was provided by Ottawa University and William Jewell College, and a liturgical dance by Kim Joyner-Wortman from the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church of Kansas City, Mo. A  video presentation of recent global travels of faculty was another highlight of the service.

Following Convocation, the crowd moved outside for the groundbreaking ceremony.  Guests heard words of appreciation from Phil Love, Chair of Central’s Board, and Central President Molly T. Marshall. Babs Baugh of the Baugh Family Foundation shared the Baugh Foundation’s rationale for their gift for the Chapel. Wallace Smith, pastor of the Journey Community Church, shared appreciation for the new home the chapel will provide his congregation, a newly formed church housed by the seminary and supported by the American Baptist Churches of the Central Region. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver shared appreciation for President Marshall and Central’s commitment to reaching out to all parts of the KC Metro area, and Alvin Brooks, former Mayor Pro Tem of Kansas City, concluded the ceremony as its featured speaker.

Founded in 1901, Central Baptist Theological Seminary prepares women and men to transform churches and communities by educating and forming them as Christian leaders who are biblically knowledgeable, theologically articulate, spiritually healthy, humanly sensitive, and professionally competent. Central is proud to have the first woman president of a Baptist seminary accredited by the Association of Theological Schools. Serving more than 30 Christian denominations, the Seminary is ecumenical and evangelical. Central is devoted to the redemptive gospel, the mission of the church, and to intellectual inquiry which encourages open-mindedness to the best insights of biblical and theological studies.
