Johnson County Wastewater wins six Peak Performance Awards, one is platinum
Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) received six Peak Performance awards presented by the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA). The Peak Performance Awards program recognizes public wastewater treatment facilities for their outstanding compliance records in the 2010 calendar year.
JCW received one Platinum Peak Performance Award to honor treatment works that have completed five years of complete and consistent National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit compliance.
The Platinum Award recipient is JCW’s Blue River Main Plant at 2523 W. 151st Street in Overland Park.
“The plant team has done a wonderful job for JCW and this award is richly deserved,” said John O’Neil, general manager. “Congratulations!”

Receiving the awards at a recent Johnson County Board of Commissioners meeting were: (from left – front) Steve Laws, Keith Hall, Mary Pegg, Tim O’Donnell, with Chairman Ed Eilert. (from left – back) Scott Jacobs, Samuel Kingsolver, Kurt Winters, and Kenny Kellison. |
Additionally, three other JCW treatment facilities were awarded the Gold Peak Performance Award which honors treatment works that have achieved 100 percent compliance with the NPDES permit for an entire calendar year. Two other treatment facilities received Silver Peak Performance Awards which recognizes facilities that have received no more than five NPDES permit violations per calendar year.
Gold Peak Performance Award recipients:
• Mill Creek Regional
• Myron K. Nelson
• New Century AirCenter |
Silver Peak Performance Award recipients:
• Douglas L. Smith Middle Basin
• Tomahawk Creek
“The staff at these facilities has worked hard to earn these awards which reflect their commitment to protect the water quality in our local waters,” O’Neil said. “Supporting them in their efforts are engineers, technicians, and environmental laboratory personnel.”
In 2010, Johnson County Wastewater had a 99.87 percent compliance rate with regard to NPDES discharge violations. Of a possible 2,273 violations, the department had only three violations.

AT&T hiring U-verse technicians and wireless employees to meet growing demand in Kansas
Governor Brownback joins AT&T in hiring announcement
AT&T* is in the process of hiring nearly 100 employees in Kansas to accommodate growth in its U-verse television, broadband and voice service and other operations.
Although employees are being hired across the state, the majority are in the Kansas City area. The largest numbers of hires are installation technicians for AT&T U-verse® TV, the fastest- growing TV service in the country, and in retail sales.

“This is some very welcome good news about jobs,” said Gov. Sam Brownback. “AT&T’s investment in high-tech jobs shows that private businesses are ready to invest and hire where they have a stable, sensible tax and regulatory environment. This is a model for how we can grow Kansas jobs. We have added more than 13,000 net private-sector jobs in Kansas this year but we still have a lot of work to do.”
The largest category of open job positions is for technicians responsible for installing AT&T U-verse services, which include AT&T U-verse TV, AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet and AT&T U-verse Voice. The hires are a combination of new jobs and filling vacancies created by attrition.
“We are investing in areas of growth, both in wireless and our award-winning U-verse services,” said Steve Hahn, president of AT&T Kansas. “We are signing up new customers every day, and we have to hire people to keep up with growing demand. Put simply, Kansas is a growth story for AT&T.”
“We are pleased that AT&T will be hiring people in cities from Dodge City to Kansas City,” said Karin Brownlee, the state’s secretary of labor. “Their continued investment in Kansas is a timely addition to help boost our Kansas economy.”
AT&T is one of the largest employers in America and the nation’s largest private employer of full-time union employees. With highly competitive wages and benefits, AT&T jobs are among the best in the U.S.
AT&T invested more than $525 million in its wireless and wireline networks in the Kansas City metropolitan area from 2008 through 2010, part of a total investment of nearly $2.3 billion in Kansas and Missouri combined during that period. Those investments have helped ensure no one has fewer dropped call in the Kansas City area than AT&T.
“These investments in employees and networks reflect our commitment to fulfill our promise to provide customers an extraordinary experience,” said Nancy Garvey, vice president and general manager for AT&T’s Greater Midwest Region. “In addition to improving quality of life for our customers, these investments create jobs and drive economic growth in the region.”
Kansas City area residents can track AT&T network improvements, products and other consumer information at the new “Focus: Kansas City” microsite. The hyper-local site displays specific network enhancements that AT&T has made in the area since the beginning of 2011. Enhancements include new cell sites, broadband speed upgrades, capacity upgrades, network connection upgrades, retail store and Wi-Fi Hotspot locations and other consumer information.
During the first half of 2011, AT&T U-verse gained more than 400,000 TV subscribers, while the major cable providers reported combined lost more than 400,000 subscribers. U-verse now has about 3.4 million subscribers nationwide.
AT&T U-verse growth is driven by an all-Internet Protocol (IP) service that delivers a better TV experience. AT&T continues to use its IP platform to further integrate TV, broadband, home phone and wireless services in new and meaningful ways for customers. More than three-fourths of AT&T U-verse TV subscribers bundle three or four services from AT&T.
