Shawnee named a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation

Shawnee has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to its community forest.  It is the 13th year Shawnee has received this national recognition.

Shawnee is also the recipient of a Tree City USA Growth Award for completing activities that strengthened its local, tree-care program. The Growth Award recognizes environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities.  This is the fifth year Shawnee has received the Growth Award.

The Tree City USA designation is given to cities meeting four standards, including a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.

“We commend Shawnee’s elected officials, volunteers and its citizens for providing vital care for its urban forest,” John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation, said. “Trees provide numerous environmental, economical and health benefits to millions of people each day, and we applaud communities that make planting and caring for trees a top priority."

For the last several years, the city has celebrated NeighborWood in October, giving away trees to area residents.  This year's NeighborWood is scheduled for Saturday, October 16, at Garrett Park.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
