Tim Harmon, 2010 Chairman
Happy New Year: Good Starts Here.

As we usher in the new year, it's time to move forward into an exciting new decade. Hopefully the lights are coming down and the Christmas trees are being disposed of or stored away for next year. It's time to press on with bold new plans and resolutions. At this time of the year we install the new Board of Directors. I am very thankful for the opportunity to be your new Chairman of the Board for 2010. But before I continue, I must recognize the exemplary performance of the outgoing Chairman, John Miller, General Manger of Lake Quivira Country Club.

John is a skilled leader and has provided the guidance, dedication and maturity to navigate through some turbulent, economic times. Rotary International would recognize him for "service above self." He has been a tireless worker and outstanding role model. Yes John, I have been taking notes. Thank you for your commitment to the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, leading by example and your selfless service.

New beginnings. It's an exciting era for the Chamber. As your new Chairman, I am committed to leading our highly skilled and talented Board to the next level. It may be important for you to know a little about your new Chairman. I have been happily married to Janet for 24 years and have five children. We are very blessed. I operate two businesses: Harmon Construction Company, a construction management, design build and general contracting business founded in Johnson County In 1987; and a commercial real estate development firm. My degree is under the School of Architecture in the department of Construction Management from the University of Washington. Any success I have achieved can be attributed to the relationships that have been fostered and cultivated.

One of the those relationships is the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. We've been members since 1992. Like anything in life, the more you give the more you benefit. This is my opportunity to give back to the community that has supported my family and my businesses for many years. I look forward to serving as your Chairman for 2010. Thank you for this opportunity.

Ripple Glass
First National Bank of Olathe (FNBO) employees and tenants welcomed a new addition to their parking lot Wednesday morning, December 16; a big, purple addition. Working efforts of FNBO secured the location as a host to a Ripple Glass recycling bin, making it one of three hosts in Shawnee.

"It is corporate responsibility," Chamber Ambassador Robin Frazee, First National Bank of Olathe, said. "More importantly, it is a small contribution for the greener good."

First National Bank of Olathe is located at 15100 W. 67th St. in Shawnee. Dozens of local businesses and municipalities will participate by hosting glass recycling bins, and the public will be encouraged to save and recycle used-glass food and beverage containers at some 60 sites, strategically located throughout the metro area. Other Ripple Glass hosts in Shawnee include the City, 5800 King St.; Chamber member Perceptive Software, 22701 W. 68th Terrace; and Johnson County Landfill, 17955 Holliday Drive.

The Kansas City area sends approximately 80,000 tons of glass to landfills each year. Ripple Glass will help Kansas City by providing a method to recycling glass and multiple, convenient locations to do so. The recycled glass is processed locally. A local business is using it to produce fiberglass insulation - saving money, lowering emissions and creating more energy- efficient homes.

Through the City's and Deffenbaugh Industries', Chamber member, partnerships with Ripple Glass, the Shawnee community is able to work toward a greener tomorrow. The Chamber would like to thank its members for their efforts in sustainability. The Chamber recognizes the importance in sustaining the community and provides a member-value, recycling program through its partnership with Deffenbaugh Industries.

Sustain Shawnee provides Chamber members the opportunity to commercially recycle at a discounted, monthly rate as well as tips to creating a green-office environment and keeping the community clean. Program participants include the following Chamber members: American Family Insurance - Steve Taylor Agency; Brothers and Associates LLC; Farmers Insurance - Joe Vohs Agency; First National Bank of Olathe; Keller Williams Realty Legacy Partners, Inc.; Mattes Appraisal Company, Inc.; Shawnee West owners; Varnum, Armstrong and Deeter, LLC; Weaver's Auto Center; and Your Wellness Connection. To become a green, Chamber member, contact Megan Hardwick, program coordinator, at the Chamber either by telephone, 913.631.6545, or email, mhardwick@shawneekschamber.com.
