Business Expo 2009

Build your business network at the Business Expo Thursday, October 8, 2009, from to 2 to 7 p.m. at the Shawnee Civic Centre, 13817 Johnson Drive. The Expo sold out this year, with more than 60 Shawnee and community businesses exhibiting; all of which are Chamber members!

The Expo is free and open to the community. There will be a few, special features this year like the city's Shawnee-Safety Exhibit from 3 to 6 p.m., which will feature a fire truck and the crew; police officers and vehicles; SWAT officers in full gear; a rescue vehicle; and Patches and Pumper, a remote-controlled device to educate children on fire safety. Also, Shawnee Mission Urgent Care will administer seasonal-flu shots to qualifying individuals for $25 each. Lastly, Fun Services of Kansas City, LLC, will have a Bounce House for children and, quite possibly, adults to enjoy!

With the Chamber having introduced its Sustain Shawnee program in March, it is only fitting the Expo takes a green turn, too. An Eco-Exhibitor Area will feature businesses encouraging green initiatives and sustainability through their products, programs and services. In addition, the Green-Works Gallery will exhibit art created from recycled materials; entries will be from local artists as well as artists from the metropolitan area.

Do not miss this opportunity to build your business network and shake hands with Shawnee and community, business leaders. It is supposed to be a sunny day, so come on out to the Expo!

Chamber businesses need your support.

Shawnee has always been a strong business community, stepping up to provide community support from business to business; "Good Starts Here." In Shawnee, new businesses are continuing to open, and many established businesses are working even harder to maintain and grow their revenues. Now, add the additional burden of a major illness on one of the owners, resulting in that business needing your support more than before. This recently happened to two of our good business members; Pam Cooper, who, with her husband Curtis, owns three The UPS Stores (two in Shawnee; 15941 W. 65th St. and 22052 W. 66th St.), and Adam Benson, with his wife Emily, who own Emily's Frozen Custard in Western Shawnee, 5428 Roberts. Pam and Adam are both positive and continue with their treatments. In addition to extending your well wishes to them, this is the time you can offer support by doing business and referring business to them, providing a little help during this tough time.

Each year during the fall, we partner with The Shawnee Dispatch and the City of Shawnee to support the Shop-Shawnee campaign.

  • Dollars spent in Shawnee provide sales-tax revenue to support the police, fire and the many services the city provides to every resident and business.
  • Local businesses help maintain a healthy, local job market and ensure future business growth.
  • Local businesses contribute to the community through donations, sponsorships and volunteering. They add to the quality of life in Shawnee.
  • When you dine out, remember to support your favorite, local restaurants but also try the newly- opened restaurants. Click the link below for a complete listing of Chamber-member restaurants.

More than ever before, we want to encourage those who work and live in Shawnee to shop locally and support local retail and service businesses. It really will make a big difference in our community.

TRC 2010_Dawn and Jeff
Dawn Kuhn, Bank Midwest, alongside Jeff Vaught, The Vaught Group, have been enthusiastically leading a group of more than 30 volunteers in securing sponsorships for year 2010. The Total Resource Campaign (TRC), "Hook, line and sinker. Make 2010 a BIG catch," kicked off last month at the September 3, Business-After-Hours event hosted by Appreciated Advertising.

The TRC incorporates both sponsorship opportunities and building the Chamber's membership. Sponsorship opportunities consist of everything from Morning Coffees, Membership Luncheons and Business After Hours to the Business Expo, the Golf Tournament and the Annual Dinner. Since the campaign's kick off, the Chamber has welcomed 24 new members! Welcome, and a BIG thank you to the TRC volunteers!

Bank of Blue Valley, 5520 Hedge Lane Terrace, will host a Business After Hours Thursday, October 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. to celebrate the success of the TRC campaign thus far. Sponsorship, marketing and membership opportunities will still be available post the TRC. Please join in on congratulating the volunteers' efforts and welcoming the new members of the Chamber!

Remember, you get from the Chamber what you give to the Chamber. Help us make year 2010 successful in business growth and community.
