"How you think is everything..."

Investor's Business Daily has identified 10 traits that are common among leaders and successful people in all walks of life. The first trait is, How you think is everything: Always be positive. Think success, not failure. Beware of a negative environment."

Much has been written about the "power of positive thinking," "attitude determines altitude" and "stop that stinking thinking." The Wall Street Journal consistently has at least one book on its best seller's list that revolves around positive leadership, behavior and success. Legendary leaders who have mastered this subject include Dale Carneige, Zig Ziglar and the "great communicator" Ronald Regan. So how do we "always be positive?" We can start by reading great books like 1776 by David McCullough, Jim Collins Good to Great or the book of Proverbs, primarily authored by Solomon. With all the negative noise bombarding us from all directions 24/7, is it possible to "think success, not failure?" Absolutely, positively, YES. Having a son attending college in Nashville, Tenn., we have become "bluegrass music" fans. XM radio made it easy for us to get our fill of this style of music. My wife, Janet, calls it "happy music." Listening to good, uplifting music can raise your spirits as well.

Find role models and observe their behaviors, actions and attitudes. You need not look far; business and community leaders such as Greg Goebel, Shawnee Mission Ford; Fire Chief Jeff Hudson, the "good, but getting better" guy; and Charley Vogt, Country Club Bank. I am sure you have your own list.

As Zig Ziglar would say, "see you at the top."

2009 AD Miller w/Harmon
Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, was an evening of elegance, good company, intense bidding, fine dining and life- long memories at the 2009 Annaul Dinner, Good Fortune Starts Here. The Sheraton Overland Park Hotel provides an ambiance and hospitality fitting for such an event. Bayer HealthCare LLC, Animal Health Division was the event's presenting sponsor and has been since 2004; thank you for your continued support.

The evening could not have been better for honoring the 2009 Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, John Miller, Lake Quivira Country Club (left), and welcoming the 2010 Chairman of the Board, Tim Harmon, Harmon Construction, Inc. (right) . Thank you both, and the Chamber is looking forward to another prosperous year.

Months of planning went into implementing the evening, which would not have been possible without the volunteers, committee, Chair Lori Barngrover of LA Graphics, Co Chair Chris Gorup of Shawnee Mission Ford and Co Chair Jody Adams of JRA Baskets. Thank you all for your time and devotion to making the event as successful as it was.

Thank you to David Atkins of Atkins Photography for your talent and support throughout the evening, as the guests had the opportunity to take their photo to remember the joyous evening. Thank you to the various sponsors for their support of the Chamber; please click the link below to view a sponsorship listing in the event's press release.
