National Tourism Week was established in 1983 when
Congress passed a joint resolution and President Ronald
Regan signed a Presidential Proclamation designating
the first, full week of May as a time to celebrate the
impact of tourism on our national economy. In 1984,
localized events began to be presented in cities, states
and travel businesses around the country to champion
the power of travel.
This year, from May 8 to May 16, communities
nationwide will be staging events, and Shawnee is
proud to be a part of it. Shawnee will be celebrating
NTW during the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce's
monthly, membership luncheon Wednesday, May 12.
After a successful event last year, the Shawnee
Convention and Visitors Bureau will, again, be
emphasizing the impact tourism has on the local,
regional and state economies. I am especially pleased
to have Dick Carter, Jr., executive director of the Travel
Industry Association of Kansas, as the guest speaker this
year. As the longtime director and lobbyist for TIAK,
few individuals in our state have more knowledge about
or experience in the travel industry than Dick. I am
quite sure he will have both an interesting and
informative presentation for all in attendance. We are
also excited about presenting our 2nd Annual, Good Starts Here Award for
outstanding service to Shawnee
tourism.
Remember, tourism is important in Shawnee and has a
major impact on the local economy. We have two, first-
class hotel properties, the Courtyard by
Marriott and the Hampton Inn. Thousands of outside visitors flock
year-round to our sports zone, Mid-
America Sports Complex, on Johnson Drive; the
Okun Fieldhouse, Shawnee Mission Beach
Volleyball and the Ice Sports
Arena. We are blessed to have some unique and
one-of-a-kind attractions like Wonderscope,
Shawnee
Town and the Jonson County
Museum, with the All- Electric House. More than
one-hundred thousand people will attend special events
during the summer and fall including Old Shawnee
Days; the Summer Concert Series; the Tour De Shawnee; Wheels & Dreams Car, Truck and
Bike Show; Shawnee Town Craft Fair; Great Grillers BBQ Contest; Oktoberfest;
Scarecrow Festival; Historical Hauntings; and Christmas Around Town. All of this
activity does make a
difference to the bottomline of Shawnee's businesses;
all of it is travel related.
We will be having some great giveaways. Let's just say
you are guaranteed a very upbeat time at this event, so
plan to join us because in Shawnee, Good Times Start
Here.
Sincerely,
Kevin Fern, Executive Director, Convention & Visitors
Bureau

Saturday, April 24, 2010, was National Rebuilding Day.
Across the country, volunteers come together in
communities to give back, helping families, veterans
and elders in need of help completing home repairs.
More than 67,000 volunteers worked on 3,500 projects
nationwide, making life-changing upgrades to those in
need.
The Shawnee Tomorrow Leadership Program Class of
2010, a program of the Shawnee Chamber of
Commerce, completed a home project through
Rebuilding Together Shawnee (RTS). The class'
particular project was more than a volunteer project, it
was life saving. The 83-year-old woman's home the
class went into to do repairs was in need of items to
make it safer like grab bars in the bathrooms. More so,
the class raised enough money to purchase a stacked,
washer and dryer unit through Sears Holdings, longtime
partner of Rebuilding Together (RT), to prevent the
homeowner from having to do laundry in the basement;
now, laundry can be done on the main level of the
home.
"The project is about much more than volunteering,"
Megan Hardwick, RTS house captain and program
coordinator at the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce,
said. "For our class, it was about changing this woman's
life and making her home a safe place to be, as a home
should be. It was about giving back to the Shawnee
community."
In addition to completing a community project, the class
is required to attend eight, full-day sessions from
January to May, ranging from Community Involvement
Day to County Government Day, and to attend one,
Civic or City Council meeting. As an additional
community project, the class will be volunteering
Monday, May 10, 2010, at the Shawnee Mission School
District Sixth Grade Olympic Festival. While the program
is educational and eye opening, it also brings
community leaders together as a team.
The Shawnee Tomorrow Leadership Program Class of
2010 consists of the following classmates: Rebecca
Bailey, Shawnee Mission Medical Center; Sue Brothers,
Mobile Symmetry; Mel Bunting, City of Shawnee; Jami
Campbell, Deffenbaugh Industries; Mary Dalton, City of
Shawnee; Eric Deeter, Realty Resource of Kansas City;
Erin DeSantis, CommunityAmerica Credit Union; Amy
Graves, Shawnee Chamber of Commerce; Megan
Hardwick, Shawnee Chamber of Commerce; Kyle Hill,
tywoo technologies, inc.; Amanda Kristek, The Sweet
Life, Rosehill; Jim Neighbor; Mike Reed, Elecsys Corp.;
Josh Reeves, INTRUST Bank, NA; Craig Schieber,
Waddell and Reed Financial Advisors; John Waters,
John Waters Construction Company; and Danielle
Yonker, Bayer HealthCare LLC, Animal Health Division.
Chair Dana Blubaugh, Pittsburg State University,
graduated from the program in 2006, Co. Chair MeLissa
Trujillo, CoreFirst Bank and Trust, graduated in 2009
and Mary Taylor, program facilitator and vice president
at the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, graduated in
2005. Applications are available to individuals either
living or working in the Shawnee community and will be
accepted in fall 2010. Individuals of all backgrounds are
encouraged to apply.

value program of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce
providing the opportunity to its members to
commercially recycle at a discounted, monthly rate. The
program is provided through a partnership between the
Chamber and
Deffenbaugh Industries.
Taking the green initiative April 2010, Perceptive
Software is now a green, Chamber member. However, it
has been reducing, reusing and recycling for some time
now. Project Green is an internal initiative at Perceptive
Software focused on sustainability and environmentally
responsible business practices. The team is continually
evaluating processes and operations to implement more
efficient, low-impact business procedures.
Perceptive Software was Shawnee's first RippleGlass
host site, and through the program, more than 25 tons of
glass has been recycled at the company's Shawnee
headquarters (22701 W. 68th Terrace, Shawnee, KS
66226). In addition to a comprehensive recycling
program, the company has an employee carpooling
program, awarding carpoolers with priority parking.
The company's enterprise content management
software is at work in more than 2,500 organizations
around the globe and has helped organizations
eliminate the need for paper and physical documents.
