School's out, summer begins! Memorial Day weekend ushers in a variety of outdoor activities, including BBQ cookouts, youth sports and family vacations. This is where memories are made.

My wife, Janet, and our two youngest children, Holly and Benjamin, held to a Memorial Day tradition by arising early and participating in the Amy Thompson Run to Daylight 8K run in Loose Park. I always have two simple goals for this race, this year notwithstanding, maintain nine-minute miles and don't stop. I achieved both and passed several, younger runners at the finish line (I'm paying for that now). One, interesting highlight was young Sergeant Dyer, who at the 5K marker was offering glazed donuts as a reward for making it to that point in the run. I was tempted but didn't give in and kept on chugging.

Memorial Day causes us to stop, reflect and remember those who went before us and gave their lives so we could experience Freedom, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. These men and women lived for something bigger than themselves: Duty, Honor and Country. We honor them during this last weekend of May by displaying "Old Glory," visiting gravesites and pausing to give thanks for their sacrifices. We enjoy a quality of life that is the envy of the world. As William Bennett, former Secretary of Education, once quipped, "It's the gate theory, open the gates on the borders of a country and see which way they run. If it's an oppressive country they run out. If it's a country of opportunities, hope and freedom, they run in."

My personal objective as the 2010 Chairman of the Board is to insure we represent our "stakeholders" by creating a business environment of opportunities, allowing them to compete, prosper and win in a challenging economy. Small business drives the economic engine that creates the majority of jobs in Shawnee, Johnson County and beyond. As a small business owner since 1987, I appreciate the right balance between taxes, economic incentives and education. Business owners must have hope and faith that if they produce the right product or provide outstanding service, the Chamber will support them in their quest. Our "stakeholders" are why we exist at the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. We're here to support you in growing your business, navigating through policies and procedures, celebrating your success.

I lead an exemplary Board comprised of "servant leaders" with the desire to help your business to experience Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Happy Memorial Day.

Tim Harmon, SCC Chairman of the Board of Directors

The city of Shawnee mourns its hero, John Glaser.

The tragic loss of Shawnee Fireman John Bradford Glaser in a house fire May 22 united all within our community and across the country. More than 70 fire trucks honored Glaser in Thursday's procession from Amos Family Funeral Home to the Church of the Resurrection, paying tribute to a Shawnee hero.

In front of Shawnee's Fire Station No.71 is the home of the city's memorial for firefighters and police officers who have died in the line of duty. This is the first Shawnee Fireman to lose his life in the line of duty. Police Officer Donald Gamblin, Jr. is the only name on the sculpture. Another hero, John Glaser, will be honored for risking his life to save others.

For the thousands who heard Fire Chief Jeff Hudson give the eulogy, know that "he (Glaser) will never be forgotten." He was a brave man and a loving father, husband, son and brother to many. The Shawnee Fire Department will always be missing one of their own.

Contributions to the John Glaser Memorial Fund can be made by contacting any Bank of America location.

GSHAward 2010 Charley Vogt
In 2009, as a celebration of the 10th anniversary of its formation, the Shawnee Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) established a Good Starts Here Award to be presented annually during National Travel and Tourism Week. The award recipient is nominated and selected by the Executive Committee of the Shawnee CVB. The award is presented to an organization and/or an individual who has made a significant contribution in support of Shawnee tourism.

At the Chamber's Membership Luncheon in May, Chair of the CVB Ann Zimmerman recognized Charley Vogt, Country Club Bank, as the Good Starts Here Award recipient for year 2010!

"When the members of the CVB Executive Committee started to ponder who it should honor this year, it reached a quick conclusion," Zimmerman said. "In Shawnee, we recognize her history first. Last year it was an easy, first choice; Jack Waters built the hotels, the reason we exist in the first place. However, it always takes more than one person to turn a vision into a reality."

Since Vogt made the decision to call Shawnee home, he incorporates promoting Shawnee into his every-day routine. His high involvement in everything Shawnee has earned him this award, having helped make the Shawnee CVB what it is today. Vogt's love for the Shawnee community combined with his willingness to get things done, and to get them done right, have shaped his character into defining Good Starts Here. Thank you for your outstanding service to Shawnee tourism and congratulations, again, Charley!
