Tim Harmon, 2010 Chairman
All things being equal...

You've probably heard it said, "All things being equal, friends do business with friends," but did you know that all things being unequal, friends still do business with friends they trust? I recently read a quote by an established businessman, "During the economic slowdown, there is a flight to safety and quality." Companies want to conduct business with stable and reliable partners with solid track records.

These turbulent times have caused business people and purchasing managers to scrutinize and examine their lists of "preferred service providers." I have observed this management principle being utilized by our clients and prospective clients when they choose a construction manager or general contractor. The clients are seeking trusted advisors, dependable partners and business "friends," if you will.

Although the business environment has been dramatically altered, the basic, underlying business principles have remained unchanged; maybe repackaged, but essentially the same. Risk management, collaboration with suppliers and protecting their balance sheets are critical to every management decision.

Your investment in the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce may assist in your efforts to develop new and deeper relationships with other businesses and consumers (buyers), who need to know about the great services and products your company offers. In my 18 years of membership in the Chamber, there has never been as much activity and participation in the Business After Hours events, the on-location Morning Coffee events and the monthly, business-to-business networking sessions and luncheons.

As I share with my employees, "In tough times, never graduate from the basics." What has made you successful in the past will most likely help you to prosper in the future. One of those basic investments should be building relationships and friendships with other businesses and decision makers. When the time arrives for them to purchase a new automobile, banking services, insurance of your product, who will they call? Their trusted friend, of course.

Next time our paths cross, I hope to hear from you that you took advantage of one of the Chamber-member services, and that your business is flourishing. There are many success stories to be told. Will yours be one of them?

Remember, "All things being equal or unequal, friends do business with friends." See you at the next Chamber event! It will be one of the best investments you make this year. Press on.

Tim Harmon, 2010 Chairman of the Board

Your Chamber has once again been selected as the No. 9 Chamber of Commerce in the Kansas City Metropolitan area by Kansas City Business Journal. With more than 30 Chambers in the area, the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce has held the No. 9 spot for the last two years. This is great recognition for the Chamber, given the current, economic environment. The Chamber has worked hard to continue adding new members and retain its current membership. The professional staff continues to find new ways to promote the Chamber and its programs and events proving beneficial to prospective members.

Another note of interest is of the top 10 Chambers listed, six are accredited Chambers through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Shawnee attained its 4-Star Accreditation in March 2008. The benefits from accreditation include enhanced membership, realistic program development and a justified pride in the organization.

Members of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce realize the importance of fostering relationships and doing business with fellow, Chamber members. With this effort, your Chamber will continue to carry out its vision to effectively promote the business interests of Shawnee and be the leading advocate for the growth and enhancement of our community.
