A
must stop for history buffs is Shawnee
Town. The town is both a tribute and a look
back at what life was like in Shawnee, Kansas,
a farm community rich in history and community
spirit; featuring 17 original and replicated buildings
filled with historical artifacts. Open Tuesday
through Saturday noon to 5 p.m. School group and
guided tours are available by appointment. At
57th & Cody (between Nieman and Quivira north
of Johnson Drive. (913-248-2360).

WONDERSCOPE
Children's Museum, provides an enjoyable hands-on
environment for children and their families, as
well as school and community groups. With 10 permanent
exhibits, plus a performance area, you can explore
the arts, humanities and sciences. Visitors are
encouraged to make choices, invent, imagine, create,
discover, play, and learn together. Exhibits and
programs are designed to allow children, ages
six months through 10 years, to experience the
wonder of learning and enable adults and teenagers
to participate in that adventure. The museum also
hosts special events, and traveling exhibits.

At the Johnson
County Museum of History, revisit early life
in Kansas through award-winning exhibits, artifacts
and historic photographs from Johnson County's
past. While you're there be sure to visit the
1950's All Electric House. Whether or not
you lived through this decade...a walk through
this charming home will take you right back to
the days of ducktails and saddle shoes. Open year-round
Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
and Sunday 1 to 4:30 p.m. The museum is located
at 6305 Lackman, just off Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Begin
your day with a morning jog or stroll with the family
at Shawnee
Mission Park. Considered the "crown jewel" of
the Johnson County parks it serves up 1,250 acres
of fun in every season, so take your pick--fishing
on the 140-acre lake, canoeing, golfing, paddle
boating...you name it and you can do it here. And
on a clear summer evening, there's nothing like
a picnic and a musical at Theatre
in the Park. Call (816)464-9420 for scheduled
event times and fees. The park is located at 79th
and Renner -- which is easily accessible from I-435
at the 87th Street or Midland Drive exits.
3&2 Baseball Park - 67-acre facility at 83rd
and Highway K-7, 913- 422-0048 or 913-422-9312.
Johnson County Girls Athletic Complex, 20200
Johnson Drive, 913- 422-5599, are home of several
national tournaments. The JCGAC fields are rated
top of the line.
Bailey Ann Okun Activity Center, 20200 Johnson
Drive, (913) 422-5599, is a 60,000-square-foot indoor
girl's basketball and volleyball complex.
Mid America Sports Complex, 20000 Johnson
Drive, (913) 441-2244 or (913) 831-3355, is one
of the area's finest softball complexes. The 70-acre
facility includes eight lighted softball fields
and two lighted baseball fields.
Ice Sports K.C. at 19900 Johnson Drive, (913)
441-3033, offers a full-service ice skating arena
and outdoor in-line skating area. Special features
include public skating, birthday parties, group
rates, family memberships, learn-to-skate classes,
hockey, pro shop and snack bar. Call for public

Shawnee Swimming Pools

Park Lanes Family Fun Center at 7701 Renner
Road, 913- 248-1110, opened in the summer of 1999,
just across from Shawnee Mission Park. It features
32 lanes of state-of-the-art bowling equipment,
the latest in cosmic bowling, party rooms, and a
4,000-square-foot arcade and bar and grill.
Shawnee Golf and Country Club
Tomahawk Hills Golf and Recreation Center
- 250 acres of fun featuring an 18-hole golf course,
sports dome and swimming pool. Located at 17501
Midland (near I-435 & Shawnee Mission Parkway),

course still being played in the metropolitan area,
Tomahawk Hills features 18-holes of challenging
play, a driving range and putting green, group or
private lessons, scheduled tee times, annual memberships,
golf cart and pull cart center, after tournament
banquet rooms, snack bar and a full line of golf
supplies & equipment. Meeting rooms are available

community

Veteran's
Tribute Park at 13500 Johnson Drive (Johnson
Drive and Pflumm Road) - a landscaped park centered
around the Hands of Freedom monument to military
veterans who have served the United States of America.
Shawnee Historic Murals - Three room-size
Charles Goslin murals depict 90 scenes and individuals
from local history. Located in the City Hall lobby,
11110 Johnson Drive, 913-631-2500.
The Protectors Memorial at the Public Safety
Center - Life-size bronze honors firefighters and
police officers who gave their lives in public service.
Outside Shawnee's police/fire headquarters, 65th
and Quivira.
A life-size bronze statue depicting Chief Charles
Bluejacket - a Shawnee Indian Chief, minister
and farmer in the town's early days has been created
by Charles Goslin and placed on the northeast corner
of Johnson Drive and Cody, Herman Laird Park.
