Gene Amos
To have known Gene Amos is a gift many of us share. I will cherish my friendship with Gene forever. I had the opportunity to sit just a couple hours with Gene in his last weeks and reflect back and set the stage for the future. One of the visions Gene spoke of is the Shawnee Optimist-Baseball-Sculpture project. He asks it be one of the memorials friends could make contributions to in memory of Gene (Shawnee Optimist, P.O. Box 13430, Shawnee Mission, KS 66282-3430).

There are so many wonderful words to describe Gene and many of those are in the Shawnee Dispatch tribute written by John Beal. He was a doer-- he was engaged in almost every civic and community organization and/or project in the area. He was a listener; yes, when you needed his ear, he was there. But he also gave advice with such persuasion that it was the way. Giving back to the community was first and foremost to Gene and his family.

His family has had a long history with the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, starting with his father, E. Paul Amos, as one of the original, Shawnee-business leaders, who established the Chamber in 1946. Paul served as the first Chamber chairman (formally president) from 1946-1949. Eugene (Gene) served as Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1963, and Gene's son, Gregg, served in 1990. In January 2009, Gene was honored with a first time as the "Lifetime Achievement" award. Gene has been an Honorary Chamber member for several years. The Amos Family Funeral Home received the 2002 Shawnee Chamber Hall of Fame award for businesses that have shaped the face of the community and made tremendous contributions to the city over a long period of time.

Written by Linda Leeper, president of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce

Shawnee businesses and developments received awards Tuesday, July 21, from the Shawnee Economic Development Council (SEDC) and the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce for their continuous support and contributions to the city.

The State of Kansas 2009 Business-Excellence Award was presented to Shawnee Mission Medical Center for not only its on-going support of the city of Shawnee and the Chamber but Johnson County as well. Shawnee Mission Medical Center is the recipient of this award for a wide range of reasons, including its significant investment in the state of Kansas; its wide-ranging health services available to the public; its employee-friendly programs like on-site daycare, employee training and career-development opportunities; and its financial support of the community's events, which is indescribably appreciated.

The Downtown-Impact Award was created by the SEDC executive committee to recognize the business-development project with the greatest impact on the city of Shawnee's downtown area in the last 12 months. Projects could include added investment and property-tax base; significant job creation; and/or enhanced visitor attraction. The recipient was selected by the Shawnee Downtown Partnership. Congratulations to Bam's Big Burgers for receiving this award.

The Downtown-Revitalization Award was created by the SEDC executive committee to honor the business that made the most significant improvement to the outside appearance of a downtown, commercial building during the last 12 months. Recipients were selected by the Shawnee Downtown Partnership. Congratulations to both 59 Plaza, LLC, for the Shawnee Plaza and Lino's Holdings LLC for Lino's Barton Place Phase One.

A special recognition of a business that has played a major role in shaping the face of the community and making a tremendous contribution to the city over a longer period of time was awarded to Deffenbaugh Industries by the Chamber. Deffenbaugh Industries is the Hall-of-Fame-Award recipient for year 2009, and it is sincerely thanked for its contributions to both the city and community.
