Good GOLF starts here! The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce's 30th Annual Golf Tournament is approaching quickly! Register today to join in on the event scheduled for Monday, May 18, at Lake Quivira Country Club. The tournament is a great opportunity to interact with both business and community leaders. It is also a special opportunity to play golf on one of the finest golf courses in the metro area; not that I am biased in any way. Planning for the tournament is being led by Kevin Bennett, Bennett Bodine & Waters, P.A., and Phil McAnany, McAnany Construction, Inc., with the two of them at the helm, you know the fun factor is one of the top priorities! There is still availability for both foursome and individual registration as well as hole sponsors. Please contact the Chamber office to learn more about how you can participate in this wonderful, Chamber tradition.

As I am sure all of the Chamber members are aware of, Mark Parkinson was sworn in as the 45th governor of the state of Kansas on April 28. Newer members may not be aware of Governor Parkinson's connection with the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. Governor Parkinson is a past chairman of the Board of Directors of our Chamber, having served in this leadership role in year 2004. In addition, he served on the Board for six years. Governor Parkinson was a successful, Shawnee-business man for many years. Along with his partners, he established and operated The Sweet Life assisted-living and nursing-home business, with two of their facilities located in Shawnee. We are fortunate to have a leader with his experience and pro-business perspective available to step in as governor at this difficult time in our state.
Nat. Tourism Week image
For the first time in a few years, Shawnee will be celebrating National Travel & Tourism Week during its monthly, Chamber luncheon on May 13th. This is also the 10th anniversary of the Shawnee Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), so there is an added reason to celebrate this year. A special thank you goes out to those early pioneers who served on the original CVB committee-Marlene Abbey, Neil Holman, Linda Leeper, John Miller, Gary Montague, John Segale, Vicki Truitt, Charlie Vogt and Jack Waters. You established a sound and solid foundation on which to build this organization. Thank you for your vision and your leadership.

With two, first-class hotels-Courtyard by Marriott and the Hampton Inn-some very unique and one-of-a- kind attractions like Wonderscope and Shawnee Town, very popular, special events like Old Shawnee Days and the Great Grillers BBQ Contest as well as the most-visited park in the entire state of Kansas, Shawnee Mission Park, tourism does make a difference in Shawnee.

I am especially pleased we will have Rick Hughes, President and CEO of the KC Convention & Visitors Association, as the guest speaker for the luncheon. Rick and I have had a few conversations about how we need to work as one in promoting the entire metro area for tourists. I am sure he will have some very insightful comments on how we can form alliances beneficial to us all. Rick and I agree we are all in the same boat when it comes to tourism, and we will sink or swim together.

We are also going to have a few surprises; a special introduction of a new video, the presentation of the first "Good Starts Here Award" for outstanding service to Shawnee tourism and some great drawings. Hope you can join us for a very special lunch. Remember, in Shawnee, Good Times Start Here.

The Kansas Small Business Development Center (KSBDC) invites small-business owners and associates to register for its seminars offered in May. A CEO roundtable will take place May 21 from 8 to 10 a.m. to discuss how to "work on your business, not in your business." This particular group meets monthly on Thursdays. Contact the Small Business Development Center for registration information and an application, 913 | 469 | 3878.

In addition to the KSBDC's seminars, free, confidential, one-on-one consulting is provided to existing and prospective small-business owners in Johnson, Wyandotte and Miami counties in Kansas.

The JCCC KSBDC's team of consultants includes experienced professionals with expertise in the areas of finance, accounting, marketing, strategic planning and general, small-business management. Consultants meet with small-business owners by appointment, and there is no charge for the KSBDC's consulting services.

For additional information about any of the seminars or services, please contact Malinda Bryan-Smith, regional director, or Kay Lampe, training and event coordinator, at 913 | 469 | 3878.
Old Shawnee Days
Old Shawnee Days relies heavily on the support of community volunteers. There are many volunteer opportunities during the festival's four days, including staffing the information booths, serving as parking lot attendants, chair and table set up, concert stagehands, concert-ticket takers and helping with hospitality. Volunteering at Old Shawnee Days is a great opportunity to be involved in one of the area's largest, community events. For more information on opportunities and to download the Volunteer Confirmation Sheet, please visit www.oldshawneedays.org, or call Lori Hoelting Barngrover at 913 | 522 | 7356.
Business Expo 2009
Mark Thursday, October 8, 2009, on your calendar as an opportunity to showcase your business-among several other Chamber businesses-in the Chamber's Business Expo 2009!
