LeeperFirst of all, I want to say thank you for your continued support of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. Everyday, as an organization, we look to make sure our benefits and programs are supportive of our business members, and we continue working together to get through these challenging, economic times. For instance, we changed up the business-after-hours event for March to provide our members advice in many different areas of expertise to support our smaller businesses with the Ask the Expert event. Thus, a special thank you to those who participated in the pilot program. In addition, the Chamber is currently launching a "Sustain Shawnee" campaign in partnership with Deffenbaugh Industries for commercial recycling and energy-saving initiatives; see details in this issue and on the Chamber's Web site.

Several individuals and families in our community are experiencing the effects of the downturn in areas as basic as food and shelter. Our community has several organizations and social services that are members of our Chamber, trying to fulfill these growing needs. Other member organizations are continuing to support the many programs for the children and others in our community. Please give your support to such organizations provided through the link, whether it be your time, good and services or contributions this year.

Churches and civic organizations are coming together to help Shawnee, Johnson County and the metropolitan community. I want to share what Deb Hartje, Trinity Lutheran Church, spoke of at the Chamber's Wednesday-morning networking a few weeks ago. Trinity Lutheran Church has designated Sunday, April 19, as Faith-in-Action Sunday (meaning no regular-scheduled services) in hopes of individuals in the community will spend the day supporting one of the 30 organizations in need of help and assistance. Visit www.TLCMS.org for more information. I am sure many other churches and organizations are also stepping up and have done great things during this difficult time.

Thank you all, again, and please let the Chamber know if you, your business and/or your employees have good news in these tough times.

Kim N. Pearse has been elected to the board of directors for George Butler Associates, Inc., an engineering and architectural firm with headquarters in Lenexa, Kan., and offices in St. Louis, Mo., and Chicago areas.

Prior to this elected position, Pearse led GBA's Structural Engineering Group for 18 years. Now, as director of marketing for GBA, Pearse leads efforts to position the firm in key markets and oversees strategic marketing, business development and associated-branding efforts.

Important to Shawnee, Pearse served on the Branding Task Force, contributing to the new image of the community. GBA has been a member of both the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce and the Shawnee Economic Development Council since year 1992. Congratulations, Pearse, and best of luck as the director of marketing!

CVB GSH color logoMark your calendar for a very special May, monthly- membership luncheon to take place on Wednesday, May 13, at Shawnee Town Hall, 11600 Johnson Drive. This day will be in celebration of Shawnee's 10th anniversary of the establishment of its Convention & Visitors Bureau, by hosting one of many regional events celebrating National Tourism Week. The special-guest speaker will be Rick Hughes, President & CEO of the Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association, who has a national reputation as one of the most dynamic tourism professionals in the country. There will be a special theme with special giveaways, so watch for final details in the May ChamberLine issue.

Roses are red, the sky is blue. The Chamber is going green. Won't you take the initiative, too? It is easier than you may think, and it very much so may save your business some green, dollar wise.

Sustain Shawnee is a new program of the Chamber, and it is provided through a partnership with Deffenbaugh Industries. This member-value program is beneficial to commercially recycling at a discounted, monthly rate--for Chamber members--and to saving money. Recyclable materials being treated as trash are unnoticed in large amounts. Materials like paper; including magazines and "junk" mail; aluminum- beverage cans, tin, plastics No. 1, 2, 5 and 6; including water bottles and milk jugs; newspaper, manila folders and the list goes on and on, are all recyclable. If businesses begin turning their trash into recyclables, then recycle bins will fill up faster than trash bins; putting green back where it belongs - in pockets.

The purpose of Sustain Shawnee is primarily to reduce, reuse and recycle in our community. Together, Chamber members can collectively help clean the environment. With one-hundred acres of the Earth's rain forests being cut down every minute, there is not a better time than now to go green.

For more information on going green, contact the Chamber office at 913 | 631 | 6545 or e-mail Megan Hardwick at mhardwick@shawneekschamber.com. Thank you!

Volunteers from community groups, downtown businesses and members of the Shawnee Downtown Partnership are invited to participate in the 7th Annual Beauty and the Best spring-beautification day Saturday, May 2, starting at 9 a.m. In addition to clean- up efforts, new activities like flower planting are planned for the day as well. This event, sponsored by the Shawnee Downtown Partnership and the City of Shawnee, provides an opportunity for businesses and community volunteers to help clean up the city's downtown area for the spring and summer seasons.

In fact, a prize will be awarded to the organization bringing in the most volunteers! Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age. Yard equipment such as rakes, trimmers, trash bags etc. will be provided; however, businesses must provide needed equipment and supplies if they are sprucing up their building. Let the cleaning up begin!

Following the mornings activities, all volunteers and participants are invited to gather in the City Hall parking lot to enjoy lunch, good music, local arts and crafts and the opening day of the Shawnee Farmers' Market! Let's get downtown Shawnee in tip-top shape for the community and its visitors.

If you are aware of a potential clean-up or flower-planting project in the downtown area, or if you would like more information about how to get involved, please contact the Planning Department at 913 | 742 | 6226 by April 17.
