Roses are red, the sky is blue. The Chamber is going green.
Won't you take the initiative, too? It is easier than you may think, and it
very much so may save your business some green, dollar wise. Sustain Shawnee is a new program of the Chamber, and it is
provided through a partnership with Deffenbaugh Industries. This member-value
program is beneficial to commercially recycling at a discounted, monthly
rate--for Chamber members--and to saving money. Recyclable materials being
treated as trash are unnoticed in large amounts. Materials like paper;
including magazines and "junk" mail; aluminum- beverage cans, tin,
plastics No. 1, 2, 5 and 6; including water bottles and milk jugs; newspaper,
manila folders and the list goes on and on, are all recyclable. If businesses
begin turning their trash into recyclables, then recycle bins will fill up
faster than trash bins; putting green back where it belongs - in pockets. The purpose of Sustain Shawnee is primarily to reduce, reuse
and recycle in our community. Together, Chamber members can collectively help
clean the environment. With one-hundred acres of the Earth's rain forests
being cut down every minute, there is not a better time than now to go green. For more information on going green, contact the Chamber
office at 913 | 631 | 6545 or e-mail Megan Hardwick at
mhardwick@shawneekschamber.com. Thank you! |

Volunteers from community groups, downtown businesses and
members of the Shawnee Downtown Partnership are invited to participate in the
7th Annual Beauty and the Best spring-beautification day Saturday, May 2,
starting at 9 a.m. In addition to clean- up efforts, new activities like
flower planting are planned for the day as well. This event, sponsored by the
Shawnee Downtown Partnership and the City of Shawnee, provides an opportunity
for businesses and community volunteers to help clean up the city's downtown
area for the spring and summer seasons. In fact, a prize will be awarded to the organization bringing
in the most volunteers! Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age. Yard
equipment such as rakes, trimmers, trash bags etc. will be provided; however,
businesses must provide needed equipment and supplies if they are sprucing up
their building. Let the cleaning up begin! Following the mornings activities, all volunteers and
participants are invited to gather in the City Hall parking lot to enjoy
lunch, good music, local arts and crafts and the opening day of the Shawnee
Farmers' Market! Let's get downtown Shawnee in tip-top shape for the
community and its visitors. If you are aware of a potential clean-up or flower-planting
project in the downtown area, or if you would like more information about how
to get involved, please contact the Planning Department at 913 | 742 | 6226
by April 17. |
