Betty Charlton Scholarship
This scholarship fund was started by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Shawnee Chamber in 1997 as a tribute to Better Charlton. Betty served as the Chamber Assistant for five years and while not a high-ranking player in local affairs, she was a popular figure in the city, chamber and church circles, and was often referred to as the "Mother of Shawnee."
The Scholarship Fund now awards one or two $1,500 scholarships each spring to students who have demonstrated an involvement in community leadership. Each and every year a portion of the proceeds from the Chamber Annual Dinner auction directly benefits the Betty Charlton Scholarship fund and continues to support future community leadership. Scholarships totaling $24,500 have been awarded to area high school seniors over the last 14 years.
